Finding Happiness

One of the greatest polymaths in the 20th century, Bertrand Russell, said “ to achieve personal happiness, learn to be indifferent to myself and my deficiencies. Center my attention increasingly upon external objects: the state of the world, diverse branches of knowledge and individuals for whom I feel affection."

In this first quarter of 21st century, out culture seems to center on the importance of self-love. "Love Yourself" is even a central message from a famous K-pop group, BTS, who has influenced young minds globally. It is indeed an important attitude not to harm and devalue one's given life.

What' s more to embrace, though, is that you should give the same love to the external: the world, knowledge, other living beings. Self-love may end up giving the feeling of void, nihilism, or abyss. Constantly appreciating wonders, truths, and great minds can help us find a reason to live on. While self-love is the foundation of a house, the attention to such external objects is the interior of the house. In this sense, we become fully happy.
